Chief is very happy to start a new era at Rivals, the place to be for UConn MBB. Now onto the game and the analysis.
Villanova is a very efficient offensive team. Our game had to be tight to get a W. Starting the game with 4 missed FT’s wasn’t a good start toward that objective, although Bouknight was on fire from the field early. Definitely in Villanova’s game plan to post up Gillespie against Cole. This sent Cole to the bench.
Chief wished we put Jackson more on Gillespie, both Cole and Gaffney had problems.
The difficult thing about Villanova is they have a three headed monster who can take you off the dribble, they can kick to good 3 point shooters and guys like Gillespie are money from the line.
Chief did think Danny’s move to full court pressure was a good change up, throwing their offensive rhythm off a little.
We had a real absence of offense when Bouknight went to the bench. Guys look tight and and not relax on their shooting release. Chief was hoping Polley would be more involved in the offense after hitting an early 3. Cole and Whaley wee 2 for 11 from the field
Akok made an early appearance and did not power up inside nor did he get in the flow on either end of the court. Other than 2 plays one game, he has not been able to contribute this season. Both Whaley and Sanogo left their feet on defense too often on pump fakes. Whaley’s offense was a brick layer exhibition.
Towards the end Villanova showed how to both use the shot clock and getting a good shot opportunity after using up clock.
While immensely talented, James showed he would benefit from getting stronger if he stayed another year, which won’t happen but Chief thinks he would benefit from long term. He’s involved in a lot of contact and that brings the risk of injuries and intereferes with his consistency. He must also learn how to counteract defensive adjustments like Villanova threw at him in the second half. Would love to see a full consistent season from him.
