I was aware of the story of Honey Fitch for quite some time. This is a good article, but it does not mention that Fitch starred on the football and baseball teams for Connecticut State College now know as UConn. In those days, pre-Field House, they played hoops in the Armory. This article does not mention that Fitch, who was not only the only black athlete but the only black person on the Storrs campus at the time, was voted by the all white student body best athlete both in 1933 and 1934:

Fitch came back to UConn in the 1960s, as a man in his 50s, and completed his Bachelor's Degree.
