UConn's Bob Diaco Hopes To Expand Role Of Preferred Walk-Ons
"We're awarding walk-ons on our team scholarships that get into the two-deep, participate or plan to participate in
the games," Diaco said. "That is something moving forward that will be a hallmark of the program."
Diaco gave Brendan Vechery, a 6-foot-6, 308-pound redshirt freshman offensive lineman from Virginia, a scholarship in
January, elevating him from walk-on status. Starting punter Justin Wain and long snapper Dominick Manco, from North
Carolina and New York, respectively, have already been bumped up to scholarship players.
It is believed the UConn staff has offered as many as nine players preferred walk-on status for the Class of 2015. Diaco is
used to a preferred walk-on program. He experienced it at Iowa, where he was a player, and at Notre Dame, where he
was defensive coordinator under coach Brian Kelly.
