Transfer Portal Opens Tomorrow!

Sammy Calhoun reported Alex K was at the UConn WBB watch party with some other MBB players. Was also seen at at least one of the women's tourney games with J-Ross. This seems to bode well for a return:

" Late in the season, Hurley openly confessed how he wished he had played Ross more. " I think Ross along with Solo, Stewie and the new freshman need to get in the weight room and all add about 10lbs or more of muscle. The Big East is a grown man league featuring alot of older/stronger players . So if they want to be able to fight threw it (and all the screens and holding allowed by BE refs), I think they need to take the Hilton Armstrong training approach. (Left as a 6-11/235 lb lottery pick. ) Maybe use some of that player development Gavin Roberts, when you were a Purdue football player !

Ross's body needs work a lot more than Stewart's or Ball's, but I felt his main issue was that he played too fast many times. This was noticeable going back to the exhibition game against URI, in which Ross looked out of synch with his teammates and was committing TOs from forcing the action.

Acaden Lewis Decommits from Kentucky:
This is a kid that UConn aggressively recruited and it seems like UK portal-recruited over him with experienced players. Possibly he got a better monetary offer elsewhere with UK's money spread out between many portal players.

At this point UConn only has a backup PG job to offer him, and it seems unlikely UConn would remain a match. I do worry that Pitino and SJ, which still needs a PG, will swoop in and grab him. We will have to watch and see what happens.

We are seeing freshman become devalued in the portal era as more and more teams recognize the value of experienced, productive transfers. So it makes me wonder whether Lewis, if he wants to start, will need to settle for a program that does not rely so heavily on portal guards.

77 career starts @ Dayton for this small PG (6 foot ) from the Bronx. Career numbers of .388 3pt/ .740 FT/ 5.3 asst /9.3 pts ... Question is would he take the job and a secondary role in a move up to a high major conference ? Nahiem Alleyne and Joey C. did it from starters to a smooth transition, as key bench pieces, so we shall see.

I would take him as a backup PG, however I think there will be more PT, if not more exposure, elsewhere.

Separately, even if Karaban returns, I think UConn still has a portal need at the 4/5- preferably someone who can backup both positions. If Karaban doesn't return, it's a glaring need. Let's not forget that Reed could be foul prone at times and we can expect Reibe to be foul prone and maybe not ready. So having a serviceable backup who can see minutes at the 4 and 5 would be helpful. This also is where the seasoned mid major starter could be a good portal add.

+1000......This, it's much needed.... a bigger body/rebounder/defender type ...for line-up versatility ( from what I've seen/heard so far Reibe, as big as he is, still needs alot of work in the physicality and strength department)

PS...Reibe is listed on the World roster for tonight's NIKE Summit in Portand @ 10pm -

My first time seeing Reibe in full game action. Despite not having the lbs. of a big like Clingan, I was impressed with his mobility for a 7 ft'er. (ER measured out 7-0/247 on the Nike roster) Also noticed he didn't get much action in the MCD AA game (0 pts), but he got plenty of PT in this game, despite some foul trouble, guarding one of the toughest match-ups in the game, #2 overall Cameron Boozer , the bigger of the twins. He also had a nice block and recovery of the ball guarding #1 A.J.Dybantsa driving one on one.

Can see why DH called him a "cheat code" on offense with some quick feet and lefty skills. He finished with 11 pts/ 8 rebs and a couple of alley-oop dunks as the starting center for team world.

Regarding Eric Reibe, I read that he led his high school team to the Maryland Private School State Championship with 23 points, 12 boards and 4-6 on 3s. One of his teammates, Adrien Stevens, is committed to Marquette.

Incredible news! Now they have 2 point guards. Just need another body at the 4/5 position- maybe 2 inclusive of Karaban

Yep..As you and I both posted, a 4/5 is certainly a need AK or not....Borges from the NH Register also mentions it in the Smith article.....

" UConn likely isn't done out of the portal yet. If Alex Karaban decides to go pro, the Huskies will be looking for a four-man who can also slide over and play the five at times, when Tarris Reed Jr. or freshman Eric Reibe runs into foul trouble. UConn probably isn't in the market for a 6-6/6-7 forward: with Jaylin Stewart, Jayden Ross and incoming freshman Jacob Furphy, the Huskies are pretty well set in that department. "

Also 247 has Malachi Smith at #13 in PG rankings, probably as high as your gonna get in a secondary roll.
Well the Huskies are bringing a PG up from the A-10 and now got one moving down. Like to see Nowell make a jump up in the A-10 like another former Uconn FR PG did....

The transfer portal closes on Tuesday April 22 for basketball and Friday April 25 for football. So will be interesting to see if any new big names pop into the portal last second.

This would be the type of guy Uconn should be all over. He's handled a move up in comp each year ( along with his 3pt %) just finishing as a JR in the ACC. He plays like a bigger version of former Husky Tyrese Martin( Nets) at 6-8/235lbs, so he'd be big and strong enough to play some "stretch" 5 like AK has as needed. PC fans would love a grab away from Cooley.

Powell is a good player and was a 30 minute per game guy at GT last year. He will not get close to that many minutes at UConn, unless Karaban isn't coming back. If Karaban isn't coming back, he could play a lot at the 4. If Karaban comes back, he could struggle to get 10 minutes per game. So I see him as a Karaban replacement more than a true backup of the 4 and 5 if Karaban were to come back. I think UConn needs to look at mid major type guys who started and are looking for a bump up in class and exposure. They need some rebounding and defensive toughness out of this roster spot.

UConn at this point really needs Karaban to make a decision because it will determine whether grabbing a guy like Powell is a good possibility.

On another note it's not clear why he decommitted from Georgetown as he just committed 2 weeks ago.

Good luck Youssef! The few minutes you played this past year, you looked more than serviceable. Best wishes for great success at High Point:

FWIW...if this is true is AK gone ????

UConn cannot realistically hope to get this kid unless AK is gone. I think ditto with Jamir Watkins. We might want to pump the brakes on Stojakavec after you look at his 3 point shooting stats. His Daddy may have been the best 3 point shooter from Europe in NBA history (arguably), but the apple seems to have fallen far from the tree on that skill.

The coaches are obviously thinking it's a possibility that he is gone, for them to be looking at Stojakovic and Miller. It could be he is quietly "holding out" while hoping to get some more NIL money. You are all used to "loud" NFL holdouts. Well welcome to the world of silent NCAA holdouts, where the player doesn't even say he is holding out, he just shuts his mouth and waits until the money materializes, or not.
