This made national news today - starting QB left UNLV, according to other published reports due to UNLV boosters defaulting on NIL agreements:

UNLV starting quarterback Matthew Sluka announced Tuesday night on social media that he will not play in any more games this season.

It should be noted that another Vegas news source is reporting that another school offered Sluka more NIL money and that's why he is leaving.

Meanwhile the University or Florida, its coach and NIL collective are also being sued by a former QB who alleges they defaulted on promised NIL money.

Obviously pretty soon word will be out on who comes through with the money and who does not but it is sounding like WILD WILD WEST with schools making wild promises to kids they cannot keep.

It's strange- right now tampering with other schools players is legal. Th bottom line on NIL is it goes back to one scene in a 1997 movie which may have changed the culture of American sports.

It's a total mess! Sluka claims UNLV offered him $100,000 verbally to attend UNLV. The head coach now says if the offer didn't come from him it's not valid. Apparently the OC made the offer and now he will not talk. The NIL collective told Sluka and his agent to negotiate with the coaches because Sluka's agent isn't registered in Nevada and couldn't do the negotiations with the NIL collective. Others at UNLV are claiming all Sluka was ever offered was $3,000. If I was Sluka I would have said "you gotta pay that up front or no deal." Maybe it's on him and his agent for not doing that.

They should 100%, but until a CBA is put into place, this will be the norm with verbal agreements nonstop.

It should be noted that the NIL Collective has vigorously denied the claim and all but accused Sluka and his agent of a shakedown.

Matthew Sluka left the UNLV football team because the university failed to make good on a promised payment of $100,000, according to his father and agent. UNLV strongly disputed their version of events.

Blueprint Sports and Entertainment, which supports UNLV’s NIL program, issued a statement denying that claim.

“There were no formal NIL offers made during Mr. Sluka’s recruitment process,” the statement said. “Additionally, Friends of UNILV did not finalize or agree to any NIL offers while he was part of the team, aside from a completed community engagement event over the summer.”

Sluka was paid $3,000 for the summer obligation, a source close to Blueprint said.

"At Blueprint Sports and Friends of UNILV, we take our commitments very seriously. We would like to emphasize that we have upheld all Friends of UNILV contracts this season, and have not defaulted on any agreements with Mr. Sluka,” Blueprint Sports said. “Our commitment to supporting Rebel student-athletes remains unwavering, and we are dedicated to maintaining the integrity of our programs. We wish Mr. Sluka all the best in his future endeavors.”

UNLV released a statement that described concerns surrounding Cromartie’s communications with the program.

“Football player Matthew Sluka’s representative made financial demands upon the university and its NIL collective in order to continue playing. UNLV athletics interpreted these demands as a violation of the NCAA pay-for-play rules, as well as Nevada state law,” the statement said. “UNLV does not engage in such activity, nor does it respond to implied threats. UNLV has honored all previously agreed-upon scholarships for Matthew Sluka.

“UNLV has conducted its due diligence and will continue to operate its programs within the framework of NCAA rules and regulations, as well as Nevada state laws.”

I thought UNLV Coach Barry Odom handled this about as well as any coach could have in his post-Sluka presser:

He might be privately pissed, but obviously his job is to coach, not to pay up on the promises of money made by others. Kind of feel sorry for him as he seems like a good, no-nonsense coach.

UNLV won big in their first game since the controversy, with the backup QB (6th year senior transfer from Campbell) playing well:

UNLV made a statement in its first game without former starting quarterback Matthew Sluka, as Hajj-Malik Williams threw for 182 yards and rushed for 119 more to lead the Rebels to a dominant 59-14 victory over Fresno State and improve to 4-0.

I still think this controversy will hurt UNLV very badly, even if they did everything right and by the rules. Other schools will tell recruits, "UNLV does not pay their NIL, do not believe a single thing they say." And it is kind of planted in many recruits' minds now. Barry Odom will have to work extra hard to counteract this in his recruiting.

Here's another layer of the carnage from the realm of be careful what you wish for and "show me the money " ...While alot of the things going on will benefit some in college sports, if lawyers for the clients ( house, hubbard, carter case) think it's all about the money then why the hell should colleges sponsor broke ass sports programs that lose them millions ? Seems like alot of other students/athletes will lose as it's already happening. Or better yet why should non-revenue sports be funded
at all ?...... Fun, Fun !
