**Latest news on UConn / Big 12 rumors....**

" the Big East/ Indy FB is perfect until it isn't ( money excluded because it's not mine). " and if Uconn is out and the money gets to much, there is always the Ivy League model for the rest of the schools left behind.
Still feel like it will be buyers remorse if the BIG 12 happens for alot of fans ( including me with my statement above). But a couple of tweets from national talking heads with a big dose of reality. As it seems like it could get closer to CFB's 2 remaining Independents (Notre Dame and Uconn ?) bothing end up with their other sports in a P-4 conference.

the Big 12 works to become the P-3 conference. ESPN gets Uconn MBB & WBB in the fold, (they own the major share of the Big 12 TV contract) and could save up money on the ACC opt out, for another round of CR shuffling too.

Meanwhile a Syracuse beat writer is urging the ACC to make their play for UConn. How about setting off a bidding war between the 2 conferences for UConn- would that get you stoked up Blades, or what? You can get as high on CR as you can on THC/Marijuana!(LOL)

I totally understand the financial need for the move and that the Big 12 wants a team in the NYC market, but I wonder how it will play out especially for the football team.
Story from Mike Anthony, long time Hartford Courant / Hearst Media Group writer :

LINK: As Big 12 expansion rumors boil, UConn pours NIL money into football: 'Tired of being disrespected

"The Huskies raised and spent about $100,000 last season through NIL efforts. This season, the number is up ten-fold, to somewhere between $1-1.25 million. That is something Benedict was willing to discuss. “We’re going to double it next year, at least,” he said. “We’re going to pour gas on it. We’re going to win in football. I’m tired of being disrespected as a brand, nationally, because of football. "

"And I get it. But the difference as we sit here today is we have NIL and revenue sharing now. And before, when we were a BCS affiliate with the old Big East, we could recruit differently. When that went away, it really impacted this university in a way that is probably unique because of the location. There are very, very good recruits here ( CT/NE). But there are a limited number. And they all go, if you look at the top 10 every year, there’s one thing in common — all of them are going to power [conferences]. Whether NIL and revenue sharing will help us keep some of those kids will be determined, but we can recruit in a totally different way. We have an unbelievable university. We have great facilities. We have great coaches. And we’re going to start providing people with great opportunities in other ways.”

"In bringing in 50-plus new players this season, UConn spread more than $1 million into the hands of 20-plus recruits from the transfer portal, many of them, like Evers, having come from power programs. The goal is for $2-3 million to be shared with, say, 40 players of high expectations next offseason, giving UConn the size, depth and talent needed in an effort to show that the program can be more than something basketball and university support drags along.
“I’m not sure how many people did more than we did, in the Group of Five,” Benedict said of programs unaffiliated with power conferences. “It’s difficult to say where we stand because there’s no ledger of, here’s the list of what everyone did around the country in the Group of Five. But if we’re not in the top five, I’d be surprised. "

Or even what a bunch of Big 12 " shot callers" will agree to decide on, for Uconn's sports future. ;)
Yep, listened to Zanetto, also his backpedaling from his "imminent headline", go figure ! As always it's about what a bunch of mediocre AD's at overpaid schools think when trying to hold on to a spot they haven't earned. Unless their scrambling when conferences are on the brink of extinction ( can anyone say PAC 12 ) As a majority of schools can't do what Uconn has shown over and over again, #WINNING and filling arena's / stadiums... When competing on a level playing field... #FACTS...Even in FB with 2 championships in the first 7 years building a brand new BCS 6 program and a Fiesta Bowl too.

From what I heard on the Zanetto podcasts, the biggest issue with the Big 12 ADs is the "Why Now?" questions, with the ACC ready to implode with the Florida State and Clemson lawsuits and likely departures. They are probably asking why not wait and grab those 2 schools, but all of that could still and maybe will happen anyway. It's really a question of how big does the "Allstate 12" want to be and how much do they value basketball?? Yormark is emphasizing basketball supremacy on the theory that basketball is undervalued, and I tend to agree with him, although I do not know what the numbers on the media rights deals suggest. Which brings back the question of whether this will help the Allstate 12 in the negotiations or whether it leads to some different offers being made by ESPN etc.

TRUE.....The ALL STATE 12, SMH !.....it's amazing what happened to "Shabazz & the Hungry Huskies" and the rest of the "think about the poor student athletes " nationwide narratives. With unlimited free agency, revenue sharing, Paige Buckets making Millions, etc, etc, etc. I always knew this was coming and just the start. I've been a broken record about it for years on this board ;)

So welcome to capitalism, the Olympics started it years ago (w/ paid "amateurs" ) and someone has to pay the bills. How about the "TRAVELERS" Coast to Coast Conference instead of the ACC, since it actually is, LOL! ( as long as Uconn gets a seat )

We are in the era of crass commercialism- it's just a question of how far it will go. It always seemed like NASCAR was the world leader in it with their drivers covered head to toe with advertising patches. I never thought the NY Yankees (which is a professional sports team) would stoop to having any advertising patches on their uniforms, but that changed last year when they were paid $25 million by Starr Insurance for an advertising patch:

The thought of a UConn player wearing the Allstate good hands symbol on their uniforms is somewhat revolting, but you better get ready for it!

I can't say I am surprised. The people who were not voting on UConn likely thought it was premature to do anything at this time. Especially with the uncertainty on ACC and a possible implosion there. Although neither Clemson's nor Florida State's football team has looked very good. Florida State has completely sucked its first couple of games.

Like your other post above, wouldn't that be nice if Dave is going stealth mode and kicking the tires elsewhere.. Like before when Uconn quietly headed back to the Big East ? Obviously depending on who is left, it would be highly more desirable to get into the "TRAVELERS" Coast to Coast Conference, formerly known as the ACC, LOL!

Blades, your Crystal Ball is hot, because this is where UConn will be headed after the Allstate Big 12 raids and cherry picks the top schools from the Travelers Conference, according to this:

I know Swaim fancies himself as some kind of self appointed CR guru. But ironically a day later a big part of his take hasn't aged very well, ie. not so easy ... LOL! Quote-
"The Big 12, though, would become the country's biggest conference with 24 members...... the most likely prediction for Big 12 expansion, and that's an easy one...(Wazzu) and (Oregon State), with a very interesting, and highly complicated, financial deal, along with six of the ACC teams to jump first to create the 24 team B12," Swaim wrote.

I guess Swaim didn't realize Wash St. and OR St. had other plans. By literally taking a page out Uconn, Cincy and USF's playbook when the only thing they had left from CR was each other an about $105 million in loot. (except those 3 sold the BE name).

Now the PAC 2 keeps everything from the PAC 12( name, $$$, NCAA credits, etc. ) and is pretty much forming a west coast version of the BE/AAC. With at least 2 more schools to go, will they look to more remnants of Aresco's old Big East/American ...the most poached conference in the country ?

Basically CR is like a game of musical chairs. The object of the game is that when the music stops you don't want to be the one left without a seat. But after each round someone is left without a seat.
+1.......Yep it never ends !!!

To add to another whole failed round of nonsense regarding the Big 12. I agree with this tweet and that some wannabe like Zanetto should never be talking about a CR move for Uconn unless it's after a done deal announced by the AD. Also IMHO, rather see Uconn stay as is in the BE/Indy rather than some half ass deal where FB isn't welcome too.

I listened to the Zanetto podcast "breaking" this "news" the day it came out. He was reporting that his source said it was "all but a done deal", or words to that effect. I remember listening to it and thinking this does not sound like a done deal so much as he wishes it to be so. Since then, however, even though Zanetto proved to be wrong and was only right about there being talks, several major mainstream medias have been running with his predictions, the latest one being on who UConn will land in recruiting. I am wondering if this aspect of his podcast (predictions) is doing more harm than good. I know he thinks it is all in fun, but especially on the business side of things, this is serious stuff and money and NIL are at stake. I don't know if the report on Lewis/Adams is right, but what if it causes Thomas/Mullins to commit elsewhere, and UConn turned out to not be the first choice of Lewis or Adams? And what if Thomas and Mullins are better players and better fits for UConn than Zanetto thinks? I think he needs to tone it down a little bit with the predictions. Maybe it is a calculated gambit to get hits and citations to his podcast, maybe it's all in fun like he says, but I do not see it as being helpful. Not trying to chill his 1st amendment rights but he can talk about these recruitments without issuing dramatic, headline grabbing predictions and proclamations that have the fake aura of being authoritative.

All he is, is similar to one of these self-proclaimed shock jocks, more or less. Certainly isn't sanctioned by Uconn. Throws crap against the wall and hopes something sticks. Proves that anyone can have a youtube channel and I can tell you without a doubt, you and I could probably be just as good @ discussing these takes. Seeing most of these "poser experts" in CR talk and recruiting LA LA land are just regurgitating second hand info anyway. I know I can give more accurate info on some of the stuff he's been speaking about, but certain things I keep to myself as a Uconn donor and supporter for 30+ years........#WINNING is all that maters..screw you to fake P-4's buying their way in....like SMU !

PS. the AAC teams said no to the PAC 12. While at the same time they were pushing for Air Force to join them, ARMY and NAVY in the American.

There will be a lot more attorney's fees billed and paid before all of this CR is over. There will be winners and losers, but not among the attorneys. They/we all get paid win or lose. I make the same kind of living litigating squabbles over Estates, life insurance policies, and real estate, and get paid win or lose. It's only in personal injury cases where we only get paid if we recover something.

Well, well since UNLV can't even pay their NIL deals, it looks like they want someone else to "show me da' money" !

" After negotiations, the MWC is expected to pay at least $25 million in bonus money to each school to remain in the conference, a person familiar with the decision told CBS Sports. The bonuses are expected to be primarily funded by exit fees that Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State will pay the conference for breaking their grant of rights agreements to join the Pac-12 in 2026. The MWC is due upwards of $17 million from each of the five departing schools."

Now about those exit fees, TBD !

Paying exit fees to one conference to join another that may or may not be viable long term is an interesting business decision, especially when TV revenue streams for the PAC 2 6, or 8 are unknown. Ultimately though the exit fee money is just an unearned bonus and found money for these schools who long term will have to find sources for funding their own NIL.

Am I silly to believe that in the modern era of NIL schools that are weaker financially aren't going to be able compete and we will see the weak being asked to leave conferences? This is sort of predictable with schools that are in P5 conferences now.

I guess Zanetto gets an interview with DB despite his CR blunder.

Uconn Vision with Dave Benedict

Touches on brand power, NIL, ( Tom Herman comments about Uconn FB - post #3 ), CR but not on specific conferences. Also Zanetto asked about an on campus FB stadium. DB says he has a more rational take, I agree as I posted on D'amelio's thoughts in this thread- post #156.

Doesn't seem very high on the priorities of things to do. And says like Andy Blaylock did last month on a podcast, there are also benefits of being @ the RENT in East Hartford. That Uconn is a very unique situation, unlike almost no other in the country with a long history of off campus games and sites for it's fans. Finishes up with revenue sharing and non revenue sports.

Now that's a big score for Zanetto. Haven't listened to it yet, but Benedict likely knows Zanetto was the start of that very bad CR leak and: (1) wanted to set the record straight, and (2) probably wanted to have a private chat with Zanetto and told him STFU on CR unless you hear it from me.

At one time UConn had an on campus football stadium and it was called Memorial Stadium. It would not have been worthy of D-1 football but was located behind where Gampel is now. In my years at UConn that is where the games were played. There was no Rent, just that field.

There is land for the stadium adjacent to East Campus where I used to live, problem is it's occupied by cows who supply the milk for the Dairy Bar. Since there has never been any expansion in that direction, I am assuming there are legal roadblocks to using that land.

Yep, I had season tix there before the Rent. Craziest thing I recall is GA Tech had scheduled a home and home with Uconn with our return game @ the brand new RENT. For some reason GA Tech needed to move up the game a year early to Memorial. They must of laughed playing in that tiny (16,000 seat) partial wooden bleachers, run down spot, I won't use the word Stadium. I had the thought watching a bigtime BCS program play in Storrs, that "it was like running Secretariat at a country fair ".

But regarding an on campus FB stadium as I posted, it's a pipedream without a P-4 membership, about $400-$500 Mil in construction costs and a super highway to Storrs falling out of the sky. The RENT is presently perfect as is....for opponents and their fans too, being in E. Hartford and close to BDL.

True that- theoretically you could build a highway connector from I-84 for the 7-8 miles south to campus, but we are talking huge amounts of money to do any of this. And that's assuming you found some real estate on which to build it. The Rent is fine, if not itself somewhat undersized by high D-1 standards.

Good list. I checked it alot during CR talk and the Rent is actually bigger than 8 existing P-5 schools ( and 65 Div-1 schools) as is. As I had mentioned in the other post, the venue was already planed for larger expansion to a mid P-5/4 level. ( remember when they built it MIAMI, VA Tech and BC were also in the BE too)

So it can jump up from 42,704 ( Michigan game) to Link- future RENT expansion to 60,000 (which would be bigger than 28 Power 4/5 schools) ..So in that case if they wanted to scrap it for a 60,000 on campus stadium in Storrs, they'd probably need 2 super highways falling out of the sky and about 4 helipads too, LOL!

Since you mentioned it, this FB season should be a good trial run on $$$ investment with NIL in the program. Mora started working with a collective that met in NYC in FEB ( probably earlier), headed by former Uconn FB player Mike Burton (yep names on the practice facility). They brought in 27 high level NIL transfers this offseason to upgrade the talent level. While bringing in a new offense/OC and a new DC from the SEC/ Miss St....so be advised ;)

PS. here's the Tom Herman quotes that I caught & posted on the Uconn Report football board early yesterday. Then it was shortened and caught fire later in the day on twitter. It was kind words as Mike Burton said but,

I am not surprised by this. I think the UConn-FAU result came as a severe shock to the FAU fan base, media and coaches. I listened to Zanetto's preview last week in which he has some 14 year old kid wannabe football analyst talking about FAU. The kid really sounded like he knew what he was talking about and portrayed a huge uphill battle for UConn to score on FAU's defense. I think he was going off the Michigan State game and holding MSU to 16 points and probably thinking UConn will be lucky to get a single TD. Obviously that was not how the game played out. Buffalo this week will be a good test because they seem to have a good team and a defense that might be a tad more legit than FAU.
