Gilbert article and more

Here's another new story on Rique from the New Haven Register:
Alterique Gilbert ready to be leader for UConn men

“He’s a winner, far beyond a competitor,” White (HS coach) continued. “He affects winning in every way, on both sides of the ball — his leadership, his ability to make a big play, and being a team player. He could’ve easily averaged 30-40 points per game for us, but that’s not the type of player he is. He wants us to get the win, and whatever he needs to do that — score 10 and get 10 assists — he’ll do it.”

"That’s why he had to have him,” White said of Ollie. “He knew, this was the kind of guy that could walk in and be an important part of what they’re trying to carry on at UConn. He fits the mold of guys who were there previously, and maybe even better in some ways.”

He sounds like a Khalid El Amin type of guy. KEA was a winner but he was also a great leader. He also was the guy who wanted to take the shot at the end of the game like the classic Pitt win at the buzzer and the national championship game when he dribbled through the entire Duke team and then lofted a soft floated over Elton Brand. KEA and Kemba Walker were the two greatest leaders UConn ever had, although both were really combo guards and not pure point guards (Kemba was really more of a shooting guard but in the NBA his point guard skills have improved).

Nice drive and dish by KEA to Albert Mourning for the 3 ( who also showed ..ONIONS !!! and it could have been a 4 pt play ) .......that made that game winner possible too !!!

What's still funny about that video after all these years and I thought it funny watching live in 1998 was that the Big East Network awarded the play of the game to Vonteego Cummings seconds before KEA made the actual play of the game by hitting a shot at the buzzer to win the game.

Was on campus with my oldest daughter and ran into facey and Gilbert. Both very nice
