Bob Diaco press conference: 9/15 - Missouri week

Performance in the game was good, and there's a lot to clean up.

Look at all these play you've got to clean up, and we still won.

Individual: Kickoff cover team, much improved, Jordan Floyd, special teams award winner. We call it a special thing, but let's call it an honoree.

On offense and defense: (Julian) Campenni, Michael Myers, Graham Stewart, both corners- the fact we didn't hear from them much is them doing a good job, and Matt Walsh.

Noel (Thomas) and Arkeel (Newsome) and Bryant (Shirreffs), Bloom was improved. Then you have a Brian Lemelle that comes up, and does a great job of catching punts.

Sorry internet went down for a second:

Marquise Vann day-to-day

Compares Matt Walsh to himself coming out of high school, says great things about his intangibles, and that Walsh is a great fit at inside linebacker for them.

Missouri defensive line is awesome. Those four down guys are great, great players. Really big and fast.

Exciting match-up between Julian Campenni, the best player on UConn's D-line, going against the best player on MIssouri's O-line, Center Evan Boehm.

They voted Julian (Campenni) captain for a reason. It's deeper than him eating up blocks.

Maty is a his greatest attribute is probably intangible, and he's won his whole life.

Led them to back-to-back SEC-East Division titles. He's a winner, he carries himself in that swagger, nothing in the game he doesn't believe he can do.

He's fast, very fast. So hard to tackle, hard to sack, hard to contain. But he also keeps his eyes downfield when he's on the move.

Dhameer Bradley: Injurd "Not necessarily, starts fidgeting,

a time to be determined by him to determine on his health.

He also has some lofty academic goals, and based on circumstances right now he's gonna focus on those two things.

Transcript health and physical health.

It's really more like a front 8. The coaching staff accidentally had 3 true Fr and one RS Fr in all at the same time late in a close game at Arkansas State. The freshmen led the effort to get a 3 and out. We lost the entire starting line from last year's team and there are still playmakers there. Coach Kuligowski could probably write his ticket anywhere based on what he has done at Mizzou.

Boehm has started every game since he was a freshman. He's currently injured, but playing through it. He's definitely not playing at 100%.

Maty is a career 52% passer. His accuracy leaves much to be desired. He throws a great long ball, but lacks touch and location on shorter passes. Mizzou didn't have him run much last year. He is a very dangerous runner when he needs to be. The problem is that some SEC defenses go out of their way to hurt QBs. He really is a gamer. When he needs to make something happen, he has done so pretty regularly. He still has a tendency to try too hard sometimes and throws up some terrible jump balls when he is on the run. He had 2 INTs last week. I've given up on sound throwing mechanics from Maty. I think he would be much better if he could just eliminate the major errors and stop running backwards away from the rush.

No problem.

Maty had a great true freshman year, playing when James Franklin was hurt at Georgia. He snuck up on a lot of teams his freshman year. Last year he really struggled. He only threw for 20 yards against Florida, but Mizzou still ran away with the game due to UF turning the ball over numerous times.(6?)

You can't read a Mizzou board without hearing talk of backup QB Drew Lock. He will get at least one series against UConn as the coaching staff is trying to bring him along for the inevitable QB injury. Lock throws a nice ball and appears to have more upside than Maty, but he is a true FR, so fans clamoring for him to take over are pretty uneducated.

Mizzou will need one of them to play well. Our #2 back sounds like he will be ready to go, but #1 is out and all the guys from 3-6 are in various degrees of hurt. It doesn't look like either of our teams have done anything on the ground so far, so QB is where it's at on Saturday.

I don't think Uconn fans are under any illusion of not knowing this could get ugly. Uconn was down to around 60 scholly players by the end of last year and has only 45 players remaining from the day HC Diaco walked on campus after he sent about 20-25 upperclassmen packing, from the Pasqualoni regime, in his 1st year for various reasons. Though Diaco says "I wish them well," (reiterating he didn't run off anybody) "The ones that are here are our guys" ... It's gonna take awhile to build up some experience. Especially since he played 10 true FR last year and currently has only about 10 recruited SR's out of 85 players ...while this year he's back to burning the redshirts of 8 true FR in the first 2 games.......Even the NC St transfer QB Sherriffs is a soph starting only his 3rd game. Former Head coach Edsall played zero true frosh for comparison the entire year...when Uconn went to Fiesta bowl in 2011....so I'm just hoping for a competitive game.
