Up next is the University of New Haven. This team went 15-12 last year and 10-10 in the NE-10, losing twice to common opponent Southern Conn. State U. New Haven's roster only has one player taller than 6'7", which is a 6'8" freshman center from Australia. I would expect UConn to go inside a lot to Brimah and Miller in halfcourt offense, as UNH appears to be capable of being overpowered inside.

It is somewhat remarkable to note that there is only one Connecticut player on New Haven's roster- Levy Gillespie from Capitol Prep/Meriden. There are more foreign players (2) than Connecticut kids on this roster.

It's also worth noting that this is a fairly young team with 10 freshmen and sophomores on the roster.

Although losing to a D-2 squad by 32 points is an embarrassment any way you cut it, it should be pointed out that St. Thomas Aquinas has been a basketball power for a long time. I can remember back in either 1984-1985 or 1985-1986- the year Sacred Heart won the D-2 national championship- STA played SHU at SHU. STA was ranked #1 in NAIA at the time and when I watched them warm up I thought there was no way SHU would beat them. They were much bigger than SHU which had no starters over 6-5" while STA had a few guys that were 6-8 and 6-9. On top of that during pre game STA put on a dunking exhibition clearly designed to intimidate SHU. Then they played the game and SHU played out of their minds and although outsized the SHU frontline and in particular Kevin Stevens and Keith Johnson rose to the challenge and SHU beat STA by 1 or 2 points.

This score is going to look very bad to St. John's alums and I think Chris Mullin has his work cut out.

By the way the UConn women took out D2 power Lubbock Christian by 56 earlier this week.
