UConn WBB, Geno Win 12th National Championship

Major congratulations to the UConn women, as most people who followed this team did not have great confidence at the midpoint of this season that they could win the national champioship. But in the last 2 months since the loss at Tennessee, they improved remarkably particularly on the defensive end.

This was one of if not the most dominant NCAA tournament runs they have had, as they won their last 3 NCAA tournament games over 3 #1 seeds by 14, 34 and 23 points, and the final game against South Carolina easily could have been a 30 point win had the starters been left in.

Final 4 MVP Azzi Fudd really came on strong in the latter part of the season and her defense improved immensely - will be fun watching her, Sarah, Jana, KK, Ashlynn and the other ladies who are all returning next year, possibly with a big portal add or two.

Kyle Neptune Fired; Villanova Job Open

Kevin Ollie got 6 years to prove he was worthy of being Jim Calhoun's successor at UConn. Kyle Neptune only got 3 years to prove he could be Jay Wright's worthy successor from Villanova:
I kind of feel sorry for Neptune, although one could argue his teams underachieved. But they were not terrible and we may have needed more time to see how he could work the portal over time.

BB Recruiting 2025 UConn Basketball Transfer Portal Tracker

It's that time of year again, PORTAL SZN! Similar to what we do for football, we wanted to make a dedicated thread to actual happenings in the portal. This first post of the thread will be updated with the running list of notable names in the portal along with guys that UConn is showing interest in and each player will have their Rivals Transfer profiles linked as well.

Uconn Football's 2025 Spring Roster is up ( starts March 11)

on the Uconn website...Joe Fagnano back ? He's listed on the spring roster? ( or is it a typical roster mistakes by Uconn IT ;)). There was a story from local media that the Fenway Bowl was his last college game.

They also announced newcomers in for spring semester, including true freshman on campus. 2 portal commits not mentioned in the press release or on the spring roster that had been confirmed earlier as signed are Hayden Bozich (OT - Brown U.) and Sammy Anderson Jr. (DB - Austin Peay )

Other Big East Action

Thriller in Providence tonight as St. John's won 72-70 on an offensive rebound putback at the buzzer by Ejiofor, who had a severe mismatch with a smaller guard trying ineffectively to block him out. Ejiofor easily high-pointed the rebound over him.

Providence led by 15-18 points for stretches of this game, but they are prone to offensive droughts, partly because of no Bryce Hopkins (out with left knee tendinitis and has missed 9 games), and partly because PC's big men suck. PC was playing a 7'2" guy named Anton Bonke, who doesn't look like a total dork and runs the floor well but looks like he is a complete stranger to the college game. He is from the country of Vanuatu which I honestly have never heard of. During the game he showed his inexperience and only scored 4 points and 1 board which, combined with the 7'1" Christ Essandoko (who UConn briefly kicked tires on) gave PC 4 points and 2 boards at the 5 position. PC's best player was Miami transfer Bensley Joseph, who looked like a poor man's Kemba Walker but did not have a ton of help.

St. John's looked good on D but kept PC in the game by shooting 11-26 on FTs and 3-18 on 3s. This is not a good shooting team at all.

Cooley Rant on McNeeley Winning FOY Over GU's Sorber

The Big East FOY race was very even and his guy lost due to season ending injury and the fact that McNeeley's stats were similar/just as good:
My comment on this news article is that it reminds me of the line from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, "the lady doth protest too much, methinks", for which you can substitute the name of Ed Cooley. Also reminds me of a famous Justin Timberlake song:
Login to view embedded media Some of this may even be posturing to motivate Sorber to come back next year and win the POY award, like Cooley is predicting. Which the kid probably will, due to his injury, depending on his projected draft placement.
