vs. Villanova (8-4, Big East ).... SAT Dec 22...12:30 p.m. tip-off (TV- CBS)

NOVA.jpg

One common opponent is Florida State. Villanova beat them by 6 on a neutral court and UConn lost to them on a neutral court by 8.

UConn needs this game badly. If they don’t win and come to the NCAA tourney seeding committee as a bubble team, 1-4 vs. P-6 teams isn’t going to cut it.

Bad match-up again for Hurley's small ball.....Another team that's he's gonna have a 6-2 guy trying to guard a 6-8 F who has 20-30lbs on them.

The bad matchup is Paschal. He is the only dangerous big they have. The other two are rebounders.

Villanova isn't getting anything out of their 5 star recruit Jahvon Quinerly who is only seeing 8 minutes per game and recently made some comments highly critical of the program:

I wonder how Jay Wright handled that issue? Every program should have a rule that you NEVER throw your own team or program under the bus on social media. To me something like that should never happen and, when it does happen, it should warrant a suspension and for a second offense, the violator has to be kicked off the team.

Jalen Adams has to do better than that with his entry passes. 2 of the worst entry passes to Carlton I have ever seen and on the second one, Villanova gets a 3 point transition score due to that needless TO.

Starting off with the same quick/ bad shots and the BS TO's they force every time they step up in comp. Calm the hell down and the game gets easier !

Vital is playing great man to man D on the Villanova PG. UConn is also MUCH better on D with Wilson and Yakwe on the floor

Gotta stop these forced shots, between to much standing around on offense & no one wants to make a pass( forget about the extra pass). No one coming to the ball ...pick it up !

Jalen has had some bad TOs, it’s like he has never seen a double team. He turns it over every time they double team him

Did Cobb even get off the bench in this
Half of the game? It’s gotten kind of obvious that Yakwe is the best UConn has defensively at the 5 but he is a tad undersized. What Cobb could add is some better ball movement on offense.

True... I can't understand what happened to the guy who use to lead the team in assists, demand the ball (even as a FR) & play aggressive.... recently he seems like he's content to just stand around in the corner even when the guy at the point is in trouble...can we get the Alpha dog back ?

Does Jalen have mono ?....another soft sloppy pass..SMH !.....and Rique stop with the bullett passes when your big is 2ft away...

Clark Kellogg--- Hurley said "stop with the hero ball" seconds later Uconn jacks a 25 FT'er !

Rique is clueless at the point....head down... into traffic... nowhere to go....not even a thought of a pass.....this is embarrassing

This game confirms UConn isn’t sniffing the NCAA tourney this year. The guards just don’t play winning basketball - they are too TO prone and just don’t play smart or tough (except for Vital who does show toughness but not enough to overcome all the bad things the backcourt does). It’s very disappointing but it is what it is. Jalen Adams today had one of the softest games I have ever seen him play. It was soft with a capital S

CV was a star..... he's the one player who actually looks like he's embraced being coached up by DH heading into conference play..... Gilbert is scary
bad at the point... never looked to make his teammates better all game long..5-11 and he thinks he can do it all on his own.... and JA I'm lost ...is he out of shape , sick....???? Jay Wright had the perfect game plan...." don't worry team.. just stay in front of them on D , they'll self destruct all on their own "

Really disappointing that we only showed up in one of the 5 games against teams with a pulse. And even in that game against Syracuse, we turned it over way too much but torrid three point shooting bailed is out. A recipe for disaster most nights.

That being said, I have faith that unlike the past few years, this team will make steady improvement each week/month. And become a tough out by March.

Canolee,

I hope your optimism is rewarded, but the UConn starting guards, though talented in basketball skills, are not blessed with high basketball IQs.

Regarding the win over Syracuse, the Orange might have won that game if they had their starting point guard. Not having him and not having experienced PG backups hurt their team very substantially the first two months of the season. UConn could be 0-5 against the P-6. And the AAC isn’t going to be easy this year.

Khalid, I'm hoping with Alterique he's still working off the rust. And Jalen, he's never had to play as hard at both ends and as a result is making too many unforced errors. As well as taking to new(better) coaching.

Maybe I'm putting too much faith in Hurley and his staff, but I'm not discouraged.

Now go win the American. Or whatever conference we are in. ;)

I am not impressed with Gilbert’s play at PG from the standpoint of seeing the Court and making good decisions. I don’t know how much rust has to be shaken off to be able to think about what you are doing out there. He plays too fast and forces the ball into spots from which his only options are to commit TO or hoist up a terrible or blocked shot. He has skills as a PG in terms of a handle and speed and moves but he lacks Court vision and generalship. He does usually play better D than Jalen, however, who between his terrible TOs and soft play/lack of aggressiveness was a huge net negative in that game. They were both outplayed by Quinerly who was a freshman averaging 8 minutes per game until the Gillespie injury gifted him minutes in this game.

Reality checks rarely feel good. Reality is Adams is a soft player, Rique is still raw, Hurley still doesnt have his barrings on this team (Cobb?, Hero Ball), etc.....

BUT- He will get there. It might not be with these players but I can see his style working with top level recruits. I really like the idea of Wilson next year with the new recruits. Akok may never ply for us but if we get Precious and/or The Beast along with Gaff/Bouk......we are heading in the right direction.

I expect next years team to still be raw but I see them stealing 50% of the game we SHOULD LOSE as to where this team loses 95% of those.

Baby step is that we arent losing to the teams we shouldnt. We are batting 1.000 in that category.
