SMU An 11.5 Point Favorite

Yea I'm not sure. This could be a blowout. We don't play well at the moody even with a healthy and big time team.

Idk how good SMU is right now tho and who they have with Jankovic leading them.

On the plus side from Borges and KO, before he knew Enoch was down:
Depth issues: Like UConn, SMU also has a relatively short bench. The Mustangs essentially rely on a seven-man rotation. All five starters average in double figures.
“We’ve got to kind of take it to them,” said Ollie. “They can’t get in foul trouble. They’ve got limited players, kind of like we do, but they’ve got very seasoned and experienced players that have been through a lot of battles.”

That half was an unmitigated disaster.......Brimah off the floor with 3 quickie fouls and then a 26-5 SMU run to end the half. I hope this is rock bottom because if it isn't I don't want to see what it looks like.......

I realize there are people on here who will try to put lipstick on any pig, but there is absolutely no excuse for this. The refs might not have been great, but they had nothing to do with the disaster we witnessed tonight. This UConn team was beaten before the opening tip. They couldn't rebound, shoot, hold onto the ball, or defend. This is even worse than the Houston debacle - at least that could partially be blamed on Adams being out. I thought they had hit their stride after the UCF and Temple games, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Hopefully there's nowhere to go but up from here, but this team keeps surprising me.

I agree, it was a total disaster in all phases and I did not like the body language at all. The Brimah technical foul and firing of the ball against the backboard was just a microcosm of a totally awful team effort last night. I could not figure out whether Brimah was angry with the ref or himself, but I saw the reply and the arm maneuver he attempted to clear space gets called for a foul 90% of the time in any basketball game. Those fouls get committed because he lacks the physical strength to back down and overpower his opponent. Also, while UConn was playing shorthanded so was SMU and so are some other teams that are doing well/better.

I would have taken a moral victory last night if we gritted it out and lost 67-62, similar to at Gtown. That's how far we've fallen and injuries certainly play a part.

I was looking at SMU's roster and they have two 4* kids and the rest are 3* or lower.

Other schools seem to be doing a lot better with a lot less. Villanova won it all last year with one 5*. A freshman that came off the bench(Brunson).

No excuses next year.

Can't defend the effort but I think it's a trap to point at the rankings of their players comparative to Uconn's. They recruit players who fit their style, each player had at least 2 assists last night, they're a well coached, versatile team but I'd say they clearly have a ceiling we don't want this team to have in the future so thankfully uconn is built differently.

And in an effort to put lipstick on this pig I will say that, again, Vance is a positive who is continuing to show growth, vital is the kind of kid we want here for 4 years and my God if Durham didn't get you interested you might need a pulse check. So our freshman look good again and btw Kentan played great again. I can't say enough about how this kid has developed into a beast.

And, silver lining on Jalen's performance, he apparently is not playing his was into the NBA. This game was an obvious matchup problem before Steve went out and credit where credit is due, Those guys have been a nightmare at home.

I will absolutely agree that there should be no excuses next year with the caveat being they're able to put healthy players on the floor.

good post, anderson. Part of the gig is finding the right blend of elite talents and role players.

It's no coincidence that both Duke and Kentucky's national championship "one and done" teams, had some veteran leadership. Not that we are going that route, but a general manager's job is to create balance on the roster and the coach has to utilize and maximize it. Not exactly rocket science.

We've been terribly unlucky with the injury bug this year. And Jackson and Durham are showing signs of very promising futures. We just can't wait for them like we've waited on Facey, who is having a brilliant senior year and one of the few bright spots. Vital is going to be one of those good role players. Defense and energy off the bench like we had in Samuel and Kromah a few years back.

Vance looks like he has something and Durham as well.......wish larrier and gilbert were in there mixing it up as well so they could be better next year as a unit. Vance has a pro body, looked good.......

I have been viewing this season through the prism of how good we can be next season. Most of the season I thought the trio of Jalen, Alterique, and Larrier would be good enough to make us a top 15 next year. We saw how much one player can make a difference when Jalen was out with his concussion. Alterique and Larrier are of the same caliber as Jalen.

What has got me even more excited for next year are:

1) Emergence of Vance Jackson. His turnaround is no longer just a small sample size. Over the pat 7 games he is shooting 52% from the field, 52% from 3, 73% free throw line, averaging 3.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and scoring 11.6 pts per game. He is taking smarter shots and is more confident about his shooting. He will help spread opposing defenses and allow guys like Jalen, Alterique and Larrier to attack the rim.

2) The flashes of talent Juwan shows in his limited minutes. Anyone who has played bball knows Juwan is a baller. Good looking shooting form. Good knack for the ball for rebounds, and can finish well around the rim. While this maybe a small sample size, he has grabbed 17 rebound in 54 minutes of play in the past 5 games. That comes out to 13 rebounds on per 40 basis. With more time I believe Juwan will show he is the real deal.

So brining this back to the SMU game, although it was a terrible outcome, the SMU game continued to show Vance is playing very well and shooting lights out, and continued to show that Juwan will be a very talented player.

Yes Jalen shot the ball terribly (1-10) but he is still shooting 44% from the field and 35% from 3 over the course of the season. His 5 turnovers during the SMU game are not too much of a concern next year as Alterique will be handling the point guard role. KO has said that Jalen is more of a scoring guard and Alterique is the point guard. Jalen has shown all season he can score.

So in conclusion the SMU game further proves next year we will be loaded. it may take a few games for Alterique and Larrier to gel back in with the team, but if everyone stays healthy I have no doubt we will one of the best teams in the country next year.
