* Summers will be an integral part of defensive coordinator Billy Crocker's 3-3-5 defense. The development in the defensive backfield, an inexperienced group, will have a lot to do with how UConn performs defensively in the fall. Several freshmen, including Omar Fortt and Tyler Coyle, could play important roles in a backfield that lost Melifonwu and Jhavon Williams. Seniors Tre Bell, a transfer from Vanderbilt, Brice McAllister and Summers will provide the experience.
* The NCAA recently voted to approve an early signing period, in December, in addition to the traditional February signing period. Edsall is in favor of the change.
