Marquette has stunned #10 Illinois. The story in this one is Marquette forced Illinois into 26 TOs, using the frenzied defense Shaka Smart has become known for. Marquette looked ragged offensively and missed 2 FTs with 30 seconds to go that would have given them the lead, but down 1 point with 15 seconds to go they got a brilliant steal from freshman guard Tyler Kolek who streaked in for the game winning layup. Kolek saw the Illinois ball handler in trouble and charged in and took it from him. One of the best late game steals I have seen in a long time. Congrats to Shaka and the Golden Eagles on a huge win for the Big East over the Big 10!!!!

Hopefully Providence can knock off Wisconsin in the second game and make it a sweep!

Here is the Tyler Kolek steal that propelled Marquette to the 1 point win over Illinois. BIG TIME play:

Kid is just a freshman. Looks like Shaka has a winner on his hands

2 more Gavitt games tonight and at halftime of the opener, Creighton is winning at Nebraska, 40-36. Creighton was expected to be garbage this year, but so far they are making a game of it.

Creighton has made it 3-0 Big East with another win for the Big East over the Big 10 in the Gavitt Games. Creighton beat Nebraska on its home court, 77-69. Creighton has won 9 of the last 10 against Nebraska.

All the preseason predictions said Creighton would be garbage and at the bottom of the league but they didn't look like garbage tonight. They played smart and efficient basketball and the controversial Greg MacDermott has kept his players on the ________ (insert proper analogy). Their frontcourt of Hawkins and Kalkbrenner in particular looked good. Creighton didn't miss back to back baskets in the final 15 minutes. Greg MacD can coach, regardless of putting his foot in his mouth, and I think everyone knows that.

Now it's up to Seton Hall to beat #4 Michigan in the second game. But they have a tall task.

In both games last night the Big Ten team was beaten on its home court before a raucous crowd. I watched the first half of the Seton Hall Michigan game, and although SHU hung with Michigan and clearly has the size up front to matchup with Michigan or anyone else, I did not expect them to win this game:

In the second game last night SJU got in a big early hole but fought back and ultimately lost a close, tightly contested game to Indiana.

Final Score Indiana 76, St.John's 74.

Big East now leads Gavitt Games 4-2 over Big Ten

Final Score: Xavier 71, Ohio State 65

This was a good game, and Ohio State refused to be beaten easily. In addition, and take notes UConn and Villanova, Xavier shot the 3 horribly, and when you shoot 3s horribly at home it's not a good sign. But Paul Scruggs threw down a BIG TIME lefthanded jam when Xavier needed it!!!! And then made 2 FTs and stole the ball to ice the game.

This is the 3rd time this week that a RANKED Big 10 team was beaten by an UNRANKED Big East Team.

More importantly the Big East has clinched the 2021 Gavitt Games with a 5-2 lead. This will be the Big East's first win in the series and it was achieved without any help from Villanova and UConn, which are the 2 best and only ranked Big East teams. The first 3 Gavitt Games 2015-2017 resulted in 4-4 ties, and the Big Ten won 5-3 in both 2018 and 2019.

The Big East is BACK BABY!!!

Yeah, Scruggs earned that BE 1 st team in crunch time. Also watched the end of Marquette-OLE Miss at the Charlston Classic. Shaka goes to 4-0 coming back from down 10 to win 78-72. I think they get Huggy and WVU in game 2 if they take care of Elon.

Halftime:

DePaul 33, Rutgers 29

Big East threatening to win final Gavitt Games clash and make it a convincing 6-2 win over Big 10.

If Big 10 gets more teams into the NCAA tournament I am going to puke!

Final score DePaul 73, Rutgers 70

Big East wins Gavitt Games 6-2 over Big 10; it's the first time in 6 years of Gavitt Games that either conference has won 6 games or more.

Another comeback in Charleston by Marquette after being down by 12 at the half ..they beat WVU 82-71. They now play another future Uconn opponent #22 St. Bonnies in the tourney championship Sunday.

The thing that jumped out at me from this boxscore is that Marquette had a 50/40/90 game as a team (FG%/3FG%/FT%), and Tyler Kolek, the freshman guard who was the hero of the upset over Illinois, had 18 points, 8 assists and 6 boards. When I saw Marquette upset Illinois, they were really ragged offensively and had trouble making shots, so to have that kind of performance against West Virginia is an eye opener.

Final score: Villanova 71, Tennessee 53

What a week for the Big East!! Marquette can complete this week with a win over St. Bonaventure and it would be one of best weeks ever for the Big East. Hopefully UConn will represent the conference well at BOA.

Purdue and their monster 7'4" center has taken down Villanova in the finals of the Tip Off Classic, 80-74. Villanova's only 2 losses have been close losses to top 6 teams.

Looking forward to seeing Shaka and his Marquette team against St. Bonaventure at 7:30 pm

I guess Depaul finally made the right coaching hire after getting rid of (Dave Leitao joins Kevin Ollie )
( DL was 5-15 last year with 1 winning season in 6) They probably belong together as 2 of Calhoun's assistants who turned out to be very mediocre as HC's. And are probably better coaching at a place where winning doesn't matter.

Don't look now but Depaul is 8-1 and up to #50 in the NET after a road win ......vs.

Another big win for 8-2 Creighton, stunning #24 BYU, 83-71. People who thought McDermott lost this team forgot he can coach and he has brought in some very good replacements for the attrition off of last year's team, led by the transfer Ryan Hawkins and the freshman point guard Nembhard who had 25 and 17 respectively. Nembhard might be Big East Freshman of the Year:

Meanwhile have any of you guys noticed that Auburn's only loss has been to UConn and they been blowing everyone else out badly, including Nebraska today by 31? The Big East's many quality OOC wins, including that one, should really get a bunch of teams in to the NCAA tourney. This is looking like a great year for the Big East top to bottom.

Well they are #11 in the NET

And Auburn's NET ranking will lift up UConn's because a rising NET, much like a rising tide, lifts all ships it has played

There are still 2 huge Big East out of conference games this weekend- Marquette hosting #4 UCLA tonight at 9:30 pm on FS2, and 6th ranked Villanova vs #2 Baylor tomorrow at 3 pm. Baylor is undefeated.

Watching Baylor-Villanova and Baylor has completely stymied Villanova with some kind of a matchup zone defense. Villanova only has 9 points with 3 minutes left 1st half as Baylor leads 25-9. Baylor looks awfully good. With Marquette having lost to UCLA last night, the last chance for Big East pride to be restored is tonight by Seton Hall vs. Rutgers. Rutgers is coming off an upset of #1 Purdue with a half court shot at the buzzer.

With Nova getting blown out by Baylor (which looks like the new number 1 team and deserving of that ranking), Seth Greenberg declared UConn as the team to beat in the Big East, and he further predicted that the Big East would get 7 teams in the NCAA tournament.

Villanova is having a hard time even getting open looks against the Baylor defense. I am trying to figure out what Baylor is doing and it looks like switching between matchup zone and man to man and overwhelming Nova with superior athleticism.

Yep, Baylor just worked their ass off with great help man D and great rotations to take Nova completely out of their offense. Nova couldn't buy an open look and when they did get one it seemed like they were so out of rhythm nothing would fall. It's also funny what's Akinjo on his 4th team ?, Wonder who's had more commits him or Vance Jackson ?

Akinjo is on his 4th team, UConn, Georgetown, Arizona and Baylor!

VJ also 4- UConn, New Mexico, Arkansas and East Carolina!

8 schools between those 2!

Villanova Blown Out By Creighton:
Two straight blowout losses for Villanova. Creighton looks like they could be tough!
True and they got a good game from the 7ft 'er by the rim. But Creighton just lost the game before to Bob Hurley Sr.'s #1 son and ASU (5-6) at home. Big difference in all these games is who is hitting their shots. Vs. ASU they were bad especially from 3 (5-25) but vs. Nova they heated up ( 9-23) plus 54% overall.

I watched most of the Nova game last night, and they were stinking up the joint (4-23 on 3's) again, especially Gillespie who was 1-8 and looked very mediocre, not close to a BE POY he was anointed with. Nova's offense kinda looked stalled (again) away from the hoop like vs. Baylor with alot of forced shots. Also noticed a stat FS1 put up that Nova is only 14-12 on the road in the BE since 2019. I guess it shows how tough these games are in the BE and every game is a battle. Plus Robinson-Earl may be bigger loss at the 5 with his versatlity and quickness, for Nova than many of the "experts" realized.

ps. also noticed that the loss drops them to 3rd in the NET of BE teams at #17, Xavier is now #11 and Uconn #14.

Also Creighton is now up to #57 giving the BE 7 teams in the the NCAA range (at 57 & higher)

Meanwhile Seton Hall forced to forfeit a game to St.John's due to Covid:
Based on the Big East Covid rules, a Covid cancellation is really, really, not what you want.

Wow this is an ugly precedent, no chance to make it up?.... don't get it.

While Hockey East is doing just the opposite:

STORRS, Conn. - Due to COVID-19 protocols, the UConn men's hockey games against Merrimack this Friday and Saturday, December 3 and 4 have been postponed. Hockey East and the schools are currently working to reschedule these two league games to later dates.
