" The UConn program has stability and traction, a little momentum for the way it is recruiting, its fifth-place finish last season and the recent announcement of upgrades to existing on-campus facilities and the construction of a 2,500-seat on-campus arena. Hockey East traditionally requires member programs have on-campus game facilities of 4,000 seats but ignored that, like it has the fact that UConn hasn’t played an on-campus game since joining the league, to allow for a plan that does make sense. "

“A lot of people might not realize that our players love going downtown,” Cavanaugh said. “And as a coach, I like knowing that when we leave campus at 3 o’clock on a Friday for a two-game weekend, I have their full attention for 36 hours.”

UConn draws well at the XL Center, with a crowd over 7,000 last season for a game against BU. The average was over 4,000, and UConn has been near the top of the league since joining.
