Bobby Hurley, not Danny. The rumors are that the SJU AD, who has Duke roots, wants Bobby Hurley as SJU coach, and that Bobby wants to be back east so Mom and Dad can come to his games. Counter-rumors suggest Bobby does not want to recruit against Danny. The other rumored choice is Tim Kluth, the Iona Coach, who St. John’s graduate Mike Francesa is openly campaigning for.

Whoever gets hired will be recruiting against Danny.

Thank god BH passed on this deal, that would have hurt UConn. Even if it was just a little it would have hurt. I have ZERO fear of St. Johns and even less than that if they hire Tim Cluess.

Zags is reporting that there is an internal conflict within the St. John’s administration with one faction supporting Tim Cluess (who has a huge 7 figure buyout at Iona), while the other faction has now offered the job to Porter Moser of Loyola Chicago. Moser has not accepted the offer and told SJU he wants to think about it. He is an Illinois guy and the money is on him saying no. Meanwhile the faction supporting Moser and NOT wanting to pay the buyout for Cluess continues its conflict with the Cluess or bust faction. Some rumors suggest that Rick Pitino, who has openly campaigned for the job, could slip in and accept below market value offer to coach the team, especially since the Porterites are looking for a cost effective option. It’s not clear whether the Porterites or Cluessians have greater power at this point. The power struggle may need to resolve itself as part of the new hire.

There are reasons why mid major coaches are running away from offers from this program. There is an unresolved power struggle going on and any new coach doesn’t know who his real boss is going to be. This is a classic Devil you know is better than the Devil you don’t know situation. It’s guaranteed that they also spoke to Steve Lavin as well and got his input as Mullin’s predecessor. SJU actually did better under Lavin than they did under Mullin and he was shown the door as well.

Let’s face some facts here. Since Louie Carnesecca retired, except for a year or two under Mike Jarvis, the program has pretty much sucked. It’s no longer viewed as a great job.
