McEnroe Advocates Hiring Chillious As Head Coach

The bigger question raised by the article is this: is UConn going to “thrift it” and hire the best “affordable” candidate (e.g., Chillious), or are they okay with the idea of paying millions to Ollie to go away and not coach while also paying more millions to someone to coach the team? Do we really know what the budget is and whether UConn can really afford Hurley, or even Cooley? If budget is an issue, does Pitino and his offer to coach anywhere and for meager pay instantly put him in play among the “bargain basement” candidates, also including Chillious? Will UConn end up “chilling with the Chill” when Raph says he will take the $350K offered by McEnroe if UConn rides with him? These are all questions that need to be answered.

I don't think you go through the trouble of getting rid of Kevin to then turn around and give Ralphie your program.

But for the sake of argument, if we're going to hand the program to an unqualified assistant so we can save money I'd rather see Ricky in charge

“Unqualified assistant” may be one possible species of “thrift shop candidates” for head coach. The other species are “damaged veteran with baggage” (e.g. Pitino), the “ancient caretaker” (e.g. Calhoun), and perhaps the slightly more expensive “young semi-proven up and comer” (e.g. Becker). If cost is a factor in the new hire, we may see candidates from all 4 of these bargain basement species.
