"According to sources, UConn’s exit fee will be payable in two lump sums this year and next, and incremental payments of roughly $1 million annually for the next six years. "

" The conference is said to have sought a much higher exit fee while UConn tried to negotiate something closer to $15 million or below. The sides eventually found a compromise, which involves maintaining an aspect of their partnership: UConn has agreed to schedule four home-and-home basketball series with AAC teams, men’s or women’s. No teams or years have been assigned."

From Courant: " Yes, it’s all worth it, the move to the Big East and what it means across the board, positioning for the future..... Reinvent yourself or die.....This life-saving move could have cost a lot more, by the way......The AAC wanted — you ready? — $30 million.......UConn needs to get on with Big East basketball and start making independent football something to embrace, stop having its Olympic sports crisscrossing the country .....Life is about to get better for UConn. In 2020. Not in 2022. "

One more from Jacobs:
"The exit cost was more than folks in Connecticut initially expected, certainly more than UConn wanted to pay and less than the American Athletic Conference wanted to receive. In the end, UConn and athletic director David Benedict had to close their eyes and rip off that Band-Aid known as Tulane and Tulsa.......The price tag: $17 million....... UConn will leave the AAC in time to compete in the Big East for the 2020-2021 season. With no football in the Big East, UConn, as expected, also announced it will pursue a future course as an FBS independent. "

" The most intriguing part on this day, however, was not in the letters. It was in the numbers. When UConn made its intentions known to leave the American in June, it was immediately reinforced that league bylaws demanded a 27-month exit notification and $10 million fee. The 27 months is key. That wouldn’t have been a two-year commitment to remain in the American. That would have meant three. Connecticut sports fans.....would have been waiting until 2022-2023. That would have been more than a temporary buzz kill. "

The UConn-USF women’s games will have a significant European flavor as USF has very successfully recruited some talented Eurogirls and UConn has 2 coming in on this year’s team and another on the way for next year.

Regarding a typical season for the BE being on actual TV networks (120 games +) vs. the AAC (65)

Temple AD regarding Uconn... post AAC

From a OwlsDaily conversation w/ Temple AD Pat Kraft
And since a bye week is considered such a competitive advantage in that team’s next game, especially late in the season, the AAC is going to need to find some late-season non-conference opponents. Those are hard to come by since every other FBS league is busy with conference play in November. That’s where UConn and other independent teams.......might come in handy......"Kraft said that Temple and UConn are mutually interested in continuing their football and men’s basketball series beyond UConn’s departure from the AAC. "

CT post on Uconn and the Big East.....Hurley cracks at Cooley's "pontificating" and Jacobs calls out his revisionist history:
“Wow, pontificating on us,” Hurley said. “I disagree with that. I don’t take offense to it, I guess. We recruited Akok Akok, James Bouknight and Jalen Gaffney and R.J. Cole and were in pretty good position to bring in a Top 15-Top 10 recruiting class before, I guess, the Big East ‘saved’ us. "

Courant's Mike Anthony puts together the pieces of the BE deal and FB Independence in his article today as most of next years FB schedule is released.

Excerpts:
"UConn’s 2020 football schedule is just about finalized. It will feature five Power Five opponents (Virginia, Indiana, Illinois and another ACC team-TBA), a trip to Ole Miss in late October, seven home games, and a game against Army at Rentschler Field to close out the season in late November.........Despite all the obvious challenges involved, the university’s chosen path of football independence does provide the freedom to create a schedule with an appeal that a slate of mostly AAC opponents lacked...... Football in the AAC — for UConn, by UConn — was boring.....(with) one losing season after another and eventually little reason remained to care about standings. Nothing was at stake, ultimately."

" So with that in mind, and the need to get men’s basketball into the Big East, an uncertain football future had to be embraced. It all came together over a long period of time, behind the scenes. Not even football coach Randy Edsall knew what was coming until the 11th hour "

“That ( the BE move) was an extremely confidential process and there were very few people involved,” athletic director David Benedict said. “That's just the way it had to be.”......Basically, Benedict chose not to let affected parties know because A) there was a risk the Big East deal would fall apart, as a prior one had a few years ago; and B) he couldn’t let word leak. "

" UConn (FB ) couldn’t do much of anything until opponents were lined up. Any interested TV outlets, if there are to be any, need to see what the product is (to) gauge what it’s worth....... “It's ongoing,” Benedict said. Can we easily put together a digital deal? Yeah. Now, we want to put together something that’s better than a straight digital deal and I think we'll be able to do that over time.”

" UConn’s guarantee games in the future will come mostly against top teams from the SEC and Big Ten. ( the BOT just addressed giving the AD quicker access to sign $1 to $5 mil payout road game contracts for FB now that they're independent - SEE POST BELOW)
.....It will be balanced with home-and-home series with mid-level Power 5 teams and regionalized with expected annual games against Boston College, UMass, Syracuse and Army. BYU is expected to be a regular opponent."

Benedict spoke last night about FB scheduling and how BB can sometimes be in discussions that take place with other schools. Then this was mentioned regarding a MSG / Yankee Stadium doubleheader:

Uconn just moved up a $1.8 mil payday to play @ Tenn... 3 years to the 2023 season.... They already have four " P-5 " games (2 @ home) of the six scheduled so far for that year too.......I guess the end of Uconn FB has been greatly exaggerated by the national media.......now all they have to do is find a HC that can start winning again, SMH

PS> Uconn will get $ 2.2 mil for 2 FB road games in 2021 (Clemson and UCF) or approximately the same $2 mil + per year that Uconn & the AAC teams are currently getting paid for an entire season of FB and men's /women's BB games on ESPN ....SMH !

From the newly christened Uconn Blog.......Uconn announces it's "back to Indy" FB schedule for 2020 (five games vs. the "Power 5")

They will play Indiana, Ole Miss, Virginia, Illinois and UNC. Which is one less P-5 game than fellow Indy... BYU has scheduled... and 4 more P-5 games than other Indy's... such as Army and Umass have on theirs...... UConn (future games) also signed an 8 year home and home deal with Army as a local rival and will finish next season with the Black Knights at the Rent.

Also regarding bowl tie-ins don't look now but:
"At 1-10, postseason isn’t a concern for the 2019 Minutemen, but even if they were 10-1 they could have been left out because all of the bowls were contractually required to invite somebody else...... Access to bowl invitations is one of the most attractive things about conference affiliation as bowl invitations are mostly tied to conferences......In a move that improves the long-term viability of their status as an independent football program, UMass is expected to announce bowl tie-ins for the next six seasons. .....AD Bamford said ESPN was involved "

If Umass can get bowl access... is a deal with Uconn far behind ?...I guess the only thing FB wise they lose not being in the AAC is having access to the College FB play-off.. but how did that work out for the AAC when they still got left out as UCF went undefeated...?...Now all Uconn has to do is find a coach who can get them to bowl games again ....

Important question: can UConn play competitive games with any of these teams, let alone beat them? Because if they are going to suck donkey balls and get beaten like a cheap Piñata on Cinco de Mayo, what’s the point?

You don't deserve an answer to that question...and if you don't know the answer, it's obviously over your head on way to many levels. But go ahead... keep trying to pile on when Coach Edsall is down...:D.

Got to give Jacobs credit he has the best line yet on HCRE:
" It has gotten to the point where if a media member instate suggests Edsall, 6-30 after three years (3-30 vs. FBS), be replaced, that media member would be ridiculed for failing to understand what Edsall inherited, what he’s building, how long it will take. Yes, we understand he ran off players and started playing freshmen.
We also understand pyramids went up faster than the UConn rebuild.
Don’t let anyone fool you. There are six or even seven potential wins on the independent 2020 schedule. If Edsall wins four, will the narrative of incremental improvement continue? Or, at 4-8 and 10-38 overall, would that be enough for a change? Will it take 14-46 and five years? Or do you give a new guy, with new energy, a chance right now to rattle off six wins his first year and build some momentum toward the future ? "
