Last time Duke lost at home to an unranked non-Power Conference team was Jan. 5, 1983 vs Wagner.........
I was checking out Va Tech after the upset of Mich St. and noticed they have a flawed roster that resembles a mid-major/ positionless team that some coaches are going with... The starting line-up doesn't have a player over 6'7" and they also play 2 small guards(6-0, 6-1 plus another at 6-3)... I guess you can get away with it if you get hot from outside (close to 50% vs Mich St.) but like you said... you also get exposed by teams with premium size if your not hitting. Makes me wonder why they couldn't keep Blackshear, especially since they are so shorthanded at the 5.On another note, I saw Dayton last night and they have administered frightening 20 point plus blowouts to Georgia and V Tech in back to back games in Maui. Dayton is in the championship game. Virginia Tech got exposed a little bit inside with weak interior D. They were allowing Toppin to repeatedly do basic spin moves and get uncontested dunks
Like I said starting line-up, but that 6-10 kid is at the bottom of the rotation with a 5'10" guard they bring off the bench at only 12 minutes pg. So Va tech doesn't have any bigs... The 2 other starters are only 6-7 and 6-6 and they have no other players between 1 through 9 that are taller than 6-4. Talk about small ball, but Va tech's new coach is from a mid major (Wofford) so I guess small ball is his thing. Makes you wonder how they beat #3 Mich St....but we saw what can happen when a much bigger small ball line-up gets hot vs. St. Joe's, who's roster is giants compared to Va tech'sV Tech does have a guy who is 6’10”, but he is a very raw freshman. The guys they had defending Toppin were not only small but also slow to react. Toppin was executing very basic post moves, spinning inside and getting essentially uncontested dunks after beating his man. While he was being souped up as a top 10 NBA Draft pick, I am guessing that those easy baskets don’t happen against UConn. If Carlton is on him the worst that happens is a foul. He was getting inside lane to the hoop way too easy. The V Tech coach needs to sit down with his bigs and show them that tape. Wasn’t good.
