Corey Evans Sees UConn Rebounding in 2018

The pieces are there for a solid team as long as we are able to find another big man, preferably a 5th year transfer. Hopefully they can just stay healthy next year.

Diarra will return next year. Just not sure the impact or if he will be expected to provide a big one based on playing experience. But make no mistake he knows his role of a rebounder and Adrien type down low gettin o boards and such.

If all the pieces return and even a guy like Diarra steps up, could see UConn being a top-five seed in the tournament next year. Talent and versatility is clearly there.

I like this statement, it's exciting to think what this team will be capable of with that guard depth, particularly given the ball skills at that position.

I think they're going to be alright on the glass next year given Larrier's athleticism, Vance's nose for the ball and the guards are putting in some work there as well. Definitely Diarra is an unknown insofar as his ability to contribute at this level but I'm wondering if Polley is recognized as a kid who gets after boards (clearly the athleticism is there) and also if we can expect a contribution from Josh, as the article suggests?

I hate to go over the obvious such as Juwan's need to put on good mass & Steve needing to contribute with defensive production but any conversation about next year has to address these issues.

Finally I have questions about leadership. I'm seeing Jalen struggling with his body language and his communication, I'm also seeing what's either a thick skull or a natural tendency to want to take over a leadership role on the part of Vital, and I'm wondering what MAL is going to offer that dynamic. Clearly this has to be Jalen's team but he's going to have to earn it. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing him mature.

I know it was a VERY small sample size but Larrier seemed like a ball hog. Diarra seemed sloppy but liked his energy.

Jalen I do like, he is uber talented and will be this teams leader next year.

Just a few comments, first of all a gigantic heart beats in Vital's chest and he has more guts than all the other guys on the team combined, and as far as I am concerned he should be named team captain next year. What you guys all mistake for thick skulledness is actually a championship/winner pedigree. It is obvious as can possibly be that this kid is a winner and has no fear and will do anything to win and you win with guys like him on your team in prominent roles and he WILL HAVE A PROMINENT ROLE next year and the year after and the year after. The scouting reports on him were all correct, they just had him rated way too low on talent.

Second is there is a glaring hole at the 5 which Mr. Evans has glossed over and there will be no bounceback or top 5 seed until that issue is addressed.

Third I agree on the bad body language of Jalen but I saw much of the same (at times) from Napier earlier in his UConn career. I have seen enough from Jalen to believe he has star potential but he needs to work harder on his conditioning, needs to get tougher and stronger and more consistent with his jumper for him to advance to that next level. He also needs further maturation.

The 5 issue is being swept under the rug. For reasons I do not understand. If you have a stable of great guards and a couple of guys who can reliably set screens and get boards and run pick and rolls you can win many games. The guards can't do it all on their own with no help. So put out a help wanted sign and go get some help.

Last, I think we should all be concerned with the injuries. We are not doctors and do not know how the Larrier and Diarra knees and Gilbert shoulder are going to hold up. I do not like that UConn has gotten some guys who were in the end damaged goods like Omar Calhoun. Guys who are hurt no matter how talented do not help. I like durable guys who can play through nickel and dime injuries and take physical abuse and are undeterred by contact. So let's go get some. Hopefully Diarra and Gilbert and Larrier come back 100% but no guarantee and we will not know until we see it.

I've seen this criticism regarding Larrier before and I have trouble understanding it. He went down very early in the season before roles were defined, he was the most mature talent wise and on a team struggling with identity it's just too convenient to start pointing fingers imo.

Vital is a winner & im happy we've got him, but being a winner & being thick headed are not mutually exclusive, but I certainly don't want to overstate negative posturing which admittedly I may have misinterpreted in the 1st place. I definitely see this kid as a team leader and most likely THE future team leader, my only point was that maybe given his natural instincts combined with Jalen's immaturity in that role Vital struggles with turning it off.

My biggest concern, which I posted in another thread (so apologies if I sound repetitive), is the number of new faces on the team. For all intents and purposes, the three injured players, if they return healthy (which is no guarantee), will be new on the team, as will the freshmen. Then, hopefully, UConn picks up two grad transfers to fill some glaring needs, which means that there are eight essentially new players, and in all likelihood four new starters. It's wishful thinking to believe that this team will instantly gel - and given the lack of opportunity for good wins in the AAC, UConn needs to build it's resume against non-conference opponents in the first month and a half of the season. That's a tall order with all the new players. Added to that concern is how much the returning injured players can contribute. We mostly discuss them like they will be back at 100%, and won't have any rust after sitting out for a year. I'm thinking UConn would be lucky to have one of the three return at his previous playing form given the injuries/problems they sustained. I think the future looks bright, but next year might be too soon.

Im not saying Larrier is a bad kid, teams gel for sure but he sure wasnt the world beater we all hoped he would be. Nor close to the NBA talent people watching our practices started saying he was.

Hes young and we will get to see again if Ollie can make kids better.

Larrier wasn't NBA ready but he was UConn's best player through the time he got hurt. He showed unbelievable talent in the exhibition games (I was at both games). He has great quickness, athleticism and a smooth shot.

UConn could be in an addition by subtraction situation with the seniors, as far as the team functioning efficiently on offense. If you watched UConn all season they were very disjointed offensively and they failed to establish any consistent low post offense and the bigs had trouble finishing very consistently. If they are playing guys with better ballhandling and finishing skills next year the offensive will operate more efficiently.
