Caron Butler being inducted into Huskies of Honor Saturday Night

I remember he was unstoppable in the 2002 NCAA tournament. UConn lost to Maryland, eventual national champion, in the Elite 8, but Butler was on fire and had one of the best NCAA tournaments ever by a UConn player. Only a 2 year guy, but it was a great 2 years.

Great read. He talks about being overweight his freshman year, something I remember. There were whispers early that year that he wasn't in proper shape, but as the season went along he got better.

That Elite 8 team was National Champ worthy.........I remember feeling more upset that Caron didn't win than UCONN not advancing.

What a great dude.

This is way off the radar but Caron might be Calhoun's best coaching/mentor job and at the same time set him up for his late struggles with recruits. After Caron JC was so motivated to help troubled kids that he often took chances on projects (Darius Smith, Wiggins, Miles) that never should have played at UCONN.

I never thought of that but it's a very interesting point Dom- Calhoun seeing himself as redeemer/saviour of these lost souls and reclamation projects.

Doug Wrenn and Doug Wiggins had some talent, but Curtis Kelly and Darius Smith really weren't players. Nate Miles, we never even saw that kid play. But Calhoun did have a 3-4 year span where he took a ton of chances on guys who were less than stellar characters,

Although it's a different situation in some ways, I know a guy who is a bit older and divorced whose daughter died of a drug overdose, and he seems to have a savior complex for troubled younger women. He has money and he has attached himself to these younger women and then spent inordinate, crazy amounts of money on college tuition, computers, etc. for these troubled young girls. In one case I am aware of he prepaid tuition for one semester and a new laptop and the girl never attended a single class and used all his money to buy dope. However he keeps doing it. It's insane behavior but maybe it gives him some peace of mind because he couldn't save his own daughter. All of these things are best left for professional psychologists. However regardless of the motive, it's laudable behavior when one tries to improve and get the best out of a younger person with potential.

Curtis kelly was new York state player of the year with Peyton siva and might have been a high school all American.

He had talent it just didn't pan out and when he left to play at Kansas st he did will

UConn Family,

Facey was also NY State Player of the Year. Facey's problem is he never improved his body weight and you cannot really play effectively at 206 pounds at the 4/5 position at the UConn level of basketball. I think if Facey had gotten bigger he would be an effective defender and rebounder and shot blocker, but he is only a reserve effective in bursts.

Curtis Kelly had more offensive skills, but was mentally and physically soft. While he later became an okay (not great) player at K-State, he was not tough and I always had the impression Calhoun asked him to leave as he did with Darius Smith and Wiggins. Wiggins was a guy who could have been like John Gwynn, an offensive specialist off the bench, but he was too much of a head case.

These guys were all recruiting mistakes for various reasons. Regarding Facey, I saw him play in high school. He was a very effective 5, dominant rebounder and shot blocker.

It had nothing to do with Coach Calhoun being a redeemer or savior. Caron could ball and at a high level. Many of the top programs were after him.... If coach thought you could play you get offered. If not then you leave the program because of lack of PT etc.....
