UConn's Amida Brimah Out Six To Eight Weeks With Broken Finger

" UConn junior center Amida Brimah suffered a broken third finger on his right hand during practice on Monday and will have to undergo surgery to repair the fracture. "

Huge loss, the team was pathetic allowing 6'2" Umass-Lowell guys to post up down low and getting uncontested lay-ups without AB in there as the rim protector. I can just imagine what it'll be like vs. other teams with real bigs. Time for Uconn to throw Enoch into the mix and let him learn. Even if he gets out of position on D at times and make mistakes.

The only good news to come out of this injury is that UConn will have to force feed Enoch. From what I have seen of the young Enoch defense and defensive positioning isn't his forte. His forte his offense and offensive rebounding. I think he will likely have lots of foul trouble so Phil Nolan could be an important player. Phil actually plays better positional defense than any of the bigs.

However judging how the team looked against UML without Brimah I am a bit nervous about how this team will defend Texas and other teams with quality bigs.

I agree with Khalid. We'll miss Brimahs crowd pleasing/energizing blocks, but this could technically improve our defense and rebounding.

The question is can Phil finish the lobs from Daniel and Co consistently?

Facey getting more minutes will certainly improve rebounding and Enoch will probably get more rebounds than Brimah did, especially on the O-boards. I think Facey and Enoch will end up soaking up a lot of the lost minutes. They have to step up and play well especially on D and the boards. Enoch may provide a bit of gravy offense because he has the body to muscle up the O boards and get fouled or get some garbage putbacks. I am not looking at this as the end of the world- these guys have to step up and they have the ability to do so.

I still think Nolan is a pure backup but he is 5 fouls off the bench against good centers that can be used as a body to soak up minutes. He does play very good positional D and takes charges on guys who telegraph their moves stupidly and/or lean their bodies into him too much.

Most teams do not have this kind of depth like UConn where they have 3 guys who can step in, 2 of whom have significant experience.

Khalid, would you start Facey for Brimah or go real small with Gibbs, Adams, Purvis, Hamilton and Miller? That's a pretty small/light team but imagine other Bigs trying to chase Hamilton and Miller?

Or you start Nolan at the 5? I like the small lineup because it would get Omar some more minutes. We might as well ride the hot hand for as long as we can.

Against teams with a lot of size it will be hard to start Miller at the 5 and Hamilton at the 4 even though he and Hamilton are pretty good rebounders. However that lineup gives UConn the most offense and could be hard for teams to match up with, plus you can bring in Calhoun off the bench. There is no way UConn could play a lineup like that against a team like Maryland, or SMU. The other problem with Miller at center is that rim protection would be close to nothing. He is not really as good or versatile a defender as advertised. Don't know if you saw the UML game the other night but it was a horror show of easy baskets inside for UML which was starting 6'2"/6'3" forwards. Hamilton was abused and honestly as versatile as he is on offense, Hamilton isn't a good defender.

I would start Facey at 5, Miller at 4, Hamilton at 3 and Gibbs and Purvis and then see where things go from there. They could experiment tomorrow vs. Central with using Miller at the 5 and see what happens. The question is does what you add on offense subtract more from your defense, or is it a wash? Remains to be seen.

I knew they were playing at 4 Sunday and then the end of the Giant near comeback, making dinner and rapping presents, I totally forgot until the final 30 minutes. Agree on Hamilton defensively and Miller is a finesse guy despite his athleticism.

As Adams grows up this year, we have a chance to be a big time offensive club but until we find more grinders, my final four aspirations are looking delusional. Hopefully Facey embraces the opportunity. He's plenty talented, he just has to develop some nastiness and confidence. He has to believe that every rebound is his.
