Watched that game in Montego Bay, Jamaica at an outdoor sports bar. What an awesome way to beat Duke and win #1.

Can’t believe it’s 20 years.

Before that game CBS went into the UConn lockerroom and Khalid El Amin said to the CBS camera, "we are going to shock the world."

What I remember very vividly is El Amin in the final minute of that game dribbling through the entire Duke team and hitting a short floater in the lane over Brand, and later on he hit the FTs that sealed the game. Then Ricky Moore caused Trajan Langdan to travel and thwarted any Duke attempt to send the game into OT. Rip Hamilton had 27 in that game as well.

It was a very experienced UConn team that was deep, had great rebounding bigs and great guards who were offensively dynamic and could defend. Moore and Jones were elite defenders, El Amin was one of the best ballhandlers in UConn history, Mouring was an ace 3 point shooter and EJ Harrison was a very good 5th guard.

That year was the start of Gonzaga's incredible 20 year run that continues to this date and could result in them finally winning it all this year. UConn beat Gonzaga in a tight Final 8 game that was dicy until Freeman and Voskuhl crashed and owned the boards the last 2 minutes of the game.

I remember in the last 2 minutes of that game Voskuhl and Freeman really hit the boards. One of the Gonzaga big men later said that at the end of the game “UConn really crashed the boards on us at the end and that was the difference in the game.”

One other thing I recall about that game is that Gonzaga had a small guard who hurt UConn some with dribble penetration, which most teams couldn’t do because of Moore. Duke, on the other hand, didn’t have good penetrating guards. Langdon was a stationary shooter and Avery, the point guard, was also a 3 point shooter and not such a great penetrating guard. They also weren’t particularly good on defense. The best defender on that Duke team was Battier. He was a similar type of player to Freeman except he could shoot from deep, but like Freeman was a dirty work kind of guy who was great especially at taking charges. The problem with Duke is that he was the extent of their toughness and they were also kind of young.
